Chilean Blueberry Committee Intensifies Winter Promotions In North America
February 4, 2013

The Chilean Blueberry Committee (CBC) is redoubling its efforts to spread the positive nutritional message about summer-fresh blueberries by engaging top nutritionist/author Jonny Bowden in a nationwide promotional effort.

To engage all levels of buyers, from importers, wholesalers, retailers, and consumers, the CBC is focusing on communicating the strong nutritional benefits of fresh blueberries along with their wide availability throughout North America during the winter months.

“We want to provide our partners with the tools and support to engage consumers, from retail displays to television spots to research and recipes that highlight the flavor and nutrition benefits that only fresh blueberries offer,” said Karen Brux, North American Managing Director of the Chilean Fresh Fruit Association.  “Our campaign will raise the profile of fresh blueberries from Chile, and educate the consumer and foodservice markets about the healthfulness and versatility of the fruit.”

To support its multi-faceted promotional effort, the CBC has engaged award-winning nutritionist and author Jonny Bowden, Ph.D., CNS.  Through media interviews and public appearances, in addition to print and electronic materials, Mr. Bowden will reinforce the message that these Little Blue Dynamos sm* are a powerful “superfood” loaded with natural anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidants.

According to Dr. Bowden, blueberries contain a beneficial compound called pterostilbene, which helps prevent the deposit of plaque in the arteries and also helps prevent some of the damage caused by oxidized cholesterol. And blueberries contain anthocyanins, plant compounds that help lower inflammation.  Like Bowden, many leading nutrition experts believe that blueberries can improve brain function, prevent Alzheimer’s and dementia (according to independent university studies).

As it has in recent years, the Chilean Blueberry Committee’s marketing support program, which is built under the auspices of the Chilean Fresh Fruit Association’s generic promotional campaign and supported by ProChile, Chile’s Promotional Bureau, includes a dynamic U.S. public relations campaign aimed at food and lifestyle journalists at newspapers, magazines, television, radio, and popular food websites. The campaign is designed to reach millions of consumers with healthful and easy-to-prepare winter recipes, distributed nationally all season long and available for download at: www.fruitsfromchile.com.

To meet the rapidly growing demand for fresh fruit year-round, Chile’s fresh fruit exporters and growers have worked hard to meet U.S.D.A. and international standards for food safety.  State-of-the-art production, packing and export facilities ensure that the highest quality fruit is in plentiful supply in supermarkets across North America during the winter.

Chile is the world’s largest exporter of fresh blueberries where the peak blueberry harvest is occurring now.
