Morocco multiplies blueberry exports to Canada seventeenfold over three seasons
- . October 2025
Moroccan blueberry exporters have dramatically increased shipments to Canada, according to EastFruit. Between July 2024 and June 2025, Morocco exported 1,900 tons of blueberries to Canada, valued at over $19 million. This represents nearly double the volume from the previous season and a staggering 17-fold increase compared to three seasons ago. The average annual growth rate over this period reached nearly 160%, setting a new benchmark in trade relations between the two countries.
Although Morocco first officially exported blueberries to Canada in 2008, it failed to establish a consistent presence at that time. Regular shipments resumed only in the 2021/22 season, making Canada a relatively new and emerging market for Moroccan blueberries.
The United States remains Canada’s primary supplier, accounting for more than half of total blueberry imports. Peru contributes roughly a quarter, while Mexico, Chile, and now Morocco share the remaining market. Morocco’s share has grown significantly, from just 0.16% in 2021/22 to 2.3% in the most recent season, mirroring its rising export volumes.
Demand for blueberries continues to grow in Canada. In the 2024/25 season, the country recorded a sharp increase in imports across nearly all major supply sources, with the exception of Chile, whose shipments have declined for the fourth consecutive season.
Canada’s peak import period for blueberries is July through August, dominated by U.S. produce. Moroccan exports begin in December and run through June, with peak volumes arriving in April and May – just after Peru’s season ends and before U.S. supply reaches its peak. During this window, Mexico and Chile also export actively, making them Morocco’s main competitors in the Canadian market.
Morocco’s success in Canada underscores its emergence as a leading player in the global blueberry industry, not only in Europe, but increasingly in North America. Notably, Morocco also achieved record-breaking blueberry exports to the United States in the recently concluded season.
