Highlight from the IBO Report: Spain’s Blueberry Industry Accelerates Shift to Earlier Varieties After Drought Relief

After years of drought and irrigation constraints that slowed investment and expansion, Spain’s blueberry industry entered 2025 with replenished water reserves following unusually heavy rains. While the rainfall eased long-term supply concerns, it also introduced short-term challenges including fungal pressure and harvest delays in certain varieties.

The sector continues its shift toward earlier fruiting proprietary cultivars, aiming to avoid the historic May oversupply and improve returns through better quality, yield, and market alignment. Production remains concentrated in Huelva, with shipments increasingly weighted toward February and March, widening the seasonal gap with northern European producers.

Strong domestic consumption growth and stable European demand have supported the transition. Medium-term performance will depend less on planted area expansion and more on varietal maturation and calendar optimization.

Dive into the full report for a closer look at Spain’s evolving position in the European blueberry market.
