Poland’s fresh blueberries are ready to break into the Taiwanese market
- . September 2025
After a long-winded process, Poland has been officially authorized to export its world-renowned fresh blueberries into Taiwan.
In July, Taiwan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs reported that his country was preparing to open its market to fresh blueberry imports from Poland. At that time, the Taiwanese Ministry of Agriculture enacted a series of phytosanitary regulations for the fruit, which were put on hold for a 60-day public comment period, as reported by Focus Taiwan.
Today, the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Agency of Taiwan’s Ministry of Agriculture published the quarantine requirements for importing fresh blueberries from Poland.
The Taiwanese media outlet noted that local authorities had completed phytosanitary inspections in Poland and that fresh blueberry imports will officially begin once the origin verification is finalized.
Requirements for importing fresh blueberries
According to the guidelines published by the Taiwanese Ministry of Agriculture, orchards supplying blueberries must operate under the supervision of the Polish State Plant Protection and Seed Control Service.
Polish blueberry suppliers must also monitor and control pests such as Drosophila suzukii, Frankliniella occidentalis, and Pseudomonas sviridiflava, in addition to keeping detailed pest control records.
Six weeks before the export season begins, the Polish agricultural authority must send a list and codes of authorized packing houses to ship the fruit to Taiwan.
Blueberries packaged in Poland must also undergo sampling for export quarantine. If any harmful organism is detected, say the guidelines, the entire shipment will be denied entry to Taiwan.
The Asian country already imports blueberries from countries such as the United States, Canada, Chile, Peru, New Zealand, and Japan. In 2024, it imported a total of 3,287 metric tons of the fruit, more than triple than a decade ago.
Poland—A European blueberry powerhouse
The blueberry industry in Poland continues to grow and evolve, with a clear shift from rapid expansion to strategic development.
Over the last seven years, both the cultivated area and total blueberry production in the European country have increased steadily.
In 2024, cultivation reached over 32,000 acres, a slight 2.6 percent increase from the previous year. The reason, however, is not that the industry is slowing down, but rather that Polish blueberry growers are currently focusing on replacing old varieties with new and improved ones.
