Agronometrics in Charts: Peruvian blueberry exports surge backed by new varietie
- . August 2025
The 2025-26 Peruvian blueberry export season began on a strong note in May, with nearly 25,000 tons of fresh, frozen, and processed fruit valued at around $137 million shipped in the opening weeks. Peruvian agro-consultancy agency Fresh Fruit Peru projects that total shipments could exceed 400,000 tons this season, a 25 percent increase over last year.
However, the export boom is weighing heavily on prices, with the average dropping by about 35 percent to $5.60/kg compared to previous campaigns. This caps the market’s potential value growth to between 8 and 13 percent.
Analysts warn that while blueberries and avocados, two of Peru’s top five agricultural exports, are expanding rapidly in volume, they face a new cycle of tighter margins where efficiency and differentiation will be critical. Peru has been steadily expanding blueberry acreage by roughly 7,400 acres annually, with nearly 62,000 acres now in production.
Strength in diversity
To strengthen its competitive edge, Peru’s blueberry industry is investing in varietal innovation.
On August 12, Danper’s Compositán farm in Virú, La Libertad, hosted a showcase of five new University of Florida and Florida Foundation Seed Producers varieties: Albus, Colossus, Magnus, Keecrisp, and FL19-006. Each of these varietals was tailored to different production windows and market preferences, enabling Peru to expand its export range. Albus is an early variety producing fruit 20 to 21 weeks post-pruning. Colossus is valued for its resilience and large fruit size. Keecrisp offers high firmness and balanced flavor, while FL19-006 stands out for its productivity, aroma, and distinctive taste. Such diversification allows producers to launch crops early, mid-season, or late, reaching specific markets and avoiding saturation.

Peru is also pushing into new markets. During a recent state visit to Jakarta, Peruvian President Dina Ercilia Boluarte announced that Peruvian blueberries will now be exported to Indonesia, as part of wider agricultural cooperation between the two countries. The move is expected to diversify export destinations further and strengthen Peru’s position as a global leader in blueberry production.
As the industry navigates rapid growth, falling prices, and rising competition, Peru’s future success will depend on balancing volume with value. By combining market diversification, advanced genetics, and efficient production, the country is positioning itself to maintain its global leadership and secure long-term profitability in an increasingly dynamic blueberry market.
