Zimbabwean blueberries are now authorized to hit the Chinese market
- . September 2025
It’s official—For the first time, Zimbabwean blueberries will be exported to China. The announcement was made after the two countries signed a new protocol agreement in Beijing, following a series of negotiations that began in April 2024. The deal represents an unprecedented opportunity for local producers to access one of the world’s fastest-growing blueberry markets.
Zimbabwe’s Horticultural Development Council (HDC) reported that the country’s blueberry exports will be subject to the sanitary and phytosanitary requirements, as well as associated compliance costs. The agreement—with one of Zimbabwe’s largest trading partners—allows the shipment of the fruit under Beijing’s zero-tariff policy, opening access to a lucrative market of 1.4 billion consumers.
“This agreement is a milestone for Zimbabwe’s horticultural sector,” said HDC Executive Director Linda Nielsen. “We now need collaboration to design policies that increase investment, boost production, and ensure our blueberries meet China’s strict quality and phytosanitary standards.”
She added that with the right support, Zimbabwean producers will be able to position the African country as a reliable supplier for the Chinese market.
An expanding trade relationship between Africa and Asia
This new agreement joins the avocado protocol signed in 2024, reinforcing the central role of horticulture in Zimbabwe’s economic growth.
The Chinese blueberry market has experienced exponential growth over the last two decades, going from barely 665 tons imported in 2005 to almost 39,000 tons in 2024, mainly from Peru and Chile.
The arrival of Zimbabwean blueberries, renowned for their unique flavor and texture, provides a new supply source for this expanding market.
Zimbabwe’s growing blueberry production
In 2025, the African country’s blueberry production is projected to be 12,000 tons, compared to 8,000 tons recorded in 2024.
According to the HDC, Zimbabwe’s blueberry exports have increased tenfold since 2018, with key markets including the European Union, the United Kingdom, and the Middle East.
