UK turns to Morocco for blueberries as imports hit new high
- . August 2025
Morocco has surged to the top of the UK’s blueberry import rankings, setting a new benchmark for export performance, according to EastFruit. Between July 2024 and June 2025, Moroccan exporters delivered 19,000 tonnes of blueberries to the UK, with a total value of USD 144 million. This marks a 44% increase year-on-year, doubling the volume recorded in the 2022/23 season and setting a new all-time high. Over the past five seasons, Morocco has expanded its blueberry exports to the UK more than tenfold!
Having led the UK raspberry supply since the 2022/23 season, Morocco has now achieved a similar breakthrough in the blueberry segment.
Although the first officially recorded shipments of Moroccan blueberries to the UK date back to 2009, a sharp growth trend only emerged after Brexit. In 2019/20, Morocco ranked eighth among UK blueberry suppliers. By 2021/22, it had climbed to third place, overtook Spain in 2022/23, and nearly matched Peru’s volumes in 2023/24. In the current season, Morocco has outpaced all competitors to become the UK’s top supplier.
The UK is now one of Morocco’s key export destinations for blueberries, trailing only Spain and the Netherlands in overall volume. The export window runs from December to June, peaking in April. During this period, Morocco’s main competitors in the UK market are Spain, the Netherlands, and Germany.
Rising consumer demand for blueberries in the UK continues to drive import growth. This season, nearly all major suppliers—except Spain and Chile—expanded their shipments. Morocco, however, posted the strongest growth. As a result, Moroccan blueberries accounted for nearly 25% of total UK imports, dominating the market in several months: over 50% in March and May, and up to 75% in April.
Morocco’s success in the UK further solidifies its position as a key global player in the blueberry trade.
